Introduction:

Situated at the mouth to the Sakonnet River on Sakonnet Point is Sakonnet Harbor, a well-protected man-made harbor with ample facilities. You might want to choose Sakonnet Harbor as an alternative to its busy neighbor Newport, but be sure to phone ahead and find out the availability of space before you arrive.

Inside the man-made harbor are two marinas and an extensive mooring field. One of the two marinas will has transient facilities, and the other has an extensive marine repair department. If you are lucky, you might be able to find one of the several guest moorings that the state of Rhode Island maintains in the harbor - all the others are run by shoreside facilities.

Navigating the Water:

Use NOAA Chart 13221.

From the Atlantic Ocean, pick up red and white Morse (A) buoy “SR” about four miles southwest of Sakonnet Harbor at the mouth of the Sakonnet River. Once you have safely arrived at the Morse (A) buoy, chart a course for red bell buoy “2A,” and then flashing red “2” at the west breakwater to the harbor. Inside the cove and at the entrance there are reported seven-foot depths, and there is good protection from every direction but the north. A long fetch down the Sakonnet River can make it annoyingly uncomfortable here in a stiff north breeze.

Local Notices to Mariners:

Local Notices to Mariners are available online from the U.S. Coast Guard.
