Introduction:

Located on the north shore of Marthas Vineyard just west of Vineyard Haven Harbor, Lake Tashmoo Harbor is an alternative stop off point for those wishing to avoid some of the hustle and bustle of nearby Vineyard Haven. With that peace and quiet comes a price at the hand of convenience. There are no marinas in Lake Tashmoo (sans one boatyard with no transient facilities), so you must anchor out or arrange to tie up to one of the many moorings located here.

Once you have secured yourself in Lake Tashmoo, Vineyard Haven is only a short one-mile walk or bicycle ride away.

Navigating the Water:

Use NOAA Chart 13229.

Lake Tashmoo Harbor is located right around the corner from Vineyard Haven Harbor about two miles west of West Chop Lighthouse. One barrier to direct entry into Lake Tashmoo from Vineyard Sound is the extensive ledge of Middle Ground, which extends in an east-west direction from West Chop all the way past Nortons Point.

FromVineyard Sound, approach Lake Tashmoo from West Chop Light. Flashing red gong buoy "2," although not a primary mark for Lake Tashmoo, is a good lighted aid to pick up before heading west behind the ledges at Middle Ground to the north. From flashing red gong buoy "2," pick up green can "25," and then the unnumbered red and green can north of West Chop. Taking care to avoid the rock ledges to the north and south, your next mark will be the unnumbered flashing red light at the inlet to lake Tashmoo.

The inlet itself has seven-foot depths, but the channel farther into the lake shoals quickly and twists around toward the east. Keep an eye on the depth sounder as you work your way into the moorings and anchorage to the south.
