Introduction:

The Abacos area of the Bahamas, often called the “Abacos Out Islands,” is part of a chain of islands that are located in the northernmost portion of the Bahamas chain. Allans-Pensacola Cay (once two islands, now joined as one) is 130 miles north of Nassau, 130 miles northeast of North Bimini, and 70 miles east of the airport on Grand Bahamas Island.

Allans-Pensacola Cay is located just north of Little Abaco Island, and has an anchorage on its west end that is very popular with cruisers, as it is well protected. The anchorage is located on the west end of the island and has 7- to 8-foot depths and a sandy bottom.

Navigating the Water:

The anchorage on Allans-Pensacola Cay is approached from the southwest, and the primary hazard on entry is the Allans Cay Rocks that jut out to the northwest from the Penasacola Cay side. Once you have avoided Allans Cay Rocks, you can head right into the anchorage and drop the hook wherever you can find room and good depths. The best depths are along the north shore of the cove on its northwest side.

Local Notices to Mariners:

See our “Local Notices to Mariners” blog for updates on the latest conditions and advisories for this area.

Things To Do/Local Events:

Aside from snorkeling, beach combing, sailing, and other water activities, there is an active and vibrant calendar of other scheduled events in the Abacos. See our “Helpful Links” section below for a detailed calendar of events.

Transportation:

There is no airstrip on Allans-Pensacola Cay, so arriving here by boat is your only option. The two nearest airports are Grand Bahama Airport on Grand Bahamas Island 70 miles to the east or Treasure Cay Airport about 22 miles to the southeast.
