To those that are concerned with water quality:
As a longtime coastal resident of South Orange County, I have been very disappointed with the deteriorating water quality at our beaches and harbors. Pacific Clean Tech has new technology that should be deployed in every marina, boat and storm drain in the United States.
Late last year, long before the BP disaster, Pacific Clean Tech was asked by senior members of the tourism industry in Mexico to create a wide scale solution to help keep the ocean and Mexican waterways clean. They are very aware that the fishing boats that bring tourism also spew large amounts of oil, gas and diesel into the swimming and fishing areas. Mexico should be commended for its efforts to be on the forefront of environmental technologies. The good environmental publicity gained is also very helpful to the tourism industry.
We are now in the process of deploying Pacific Clean Tech foam sponge hydrocarbon absorbent products in marinas and boats in parts of Mexico in an effort to improve water quality. It will be starting as a voluntary measure by many of the charter fishing groups, hotels and other concerned organizations. Small sections (1 cubic foot) will be used in boat bilges to absorb oil, fuel and other contaminants. Additionally, areas of the marina and water surface will be “swept” with our oil mops. After the boats are used for the day, the sponge will be wrung out at a cleaning station consisting of a barrel with a wringer attached to the top. The contents of the barrels will be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. Much of the contents will be purchased and recycled thereby helping to offset the costs. These barrels and the maintenance will probably be corporate sponsored. We are planning large publicity events surrounding these deployments. Mexican government environmental officials are considering whether this technology should be mandated for all boats in public marinas.
We think a similar program should be in place in all US harbors and marinas and are asking for your help, feedback and assistance in creating these fiscally and environmentally efficient programs. I would be happy to set up demonstrations of the products at your earliest convenience (hopefully before we get more rain).
These foam sponge hydrocarbon absorbent products were used very successfully at the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico and also the Dalian, China oil spill. Pacific Clean Tech has just been asked to help with the disaster on the Danube in Hungary.
In addition to deployment at harbors, we think this new technology should be in every storm drain and in every marina or anywhere that hydrocarbons can meet water. We have oil spills coming out of the storm drains every day, they just aren’t as big and as well known as BP, Valdez or Dalian. The public needs to know that this clean up technology is now available.
These sponges can be custom fabricated for many different applications. Deployed properly on a large scale in or around storm drains or at water outfalls, these sponges will stop large amounts of hydrocarbons (oil, gas, diesel, etc) and other contaminants from reaching waterways. The amount of contaminants that would have reached the waterways will be easily quantified by regular wringing out the sponges into 55 gallon drums. The contaminants can be tested and then safely disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. The sponge is reusable up to 100 times and can then be safely disposed of in a landfill where it will safely biodegrade. Pacific Clean Tech and its subcontractors can perform all work if needed or we can train your personnel. I have all of the MSDS info if needed. Federal grant money seems to be available to cities and other organizations for products such as this.

NEW OIL ABSORBENT TECHNOLOGY WILL REVOLUTIONIZE FUTURE SPILL CLEANUPS AND PROTECTION OF STORMWATER DRAINS
Our patent pending material and range of products which will revolutionize:
All types of oil spill cleanups, both large and small
Removal of oil and hydrocarbon pollutants from stormwater and snow melt run-off
Purification of water bodies (streams, rivers, lakes, wetlands and estuaries) to which - mostly untreated -surface water drains discharge and where a build-up of oil-based contaminants is causing serious pollution.
This amazing new foam has five properties that make it the simplest, most effective, most affordable and most eco-friendly oil removal technology in the world!
(1) It is Hydrophobic, repelling and floating upon water.
(2) It is Highly Oleophilic, attracting and rapidly absorbing up to 32 times its weight in oils and hydrocarbons.
(3) It will securely hold the captured oils, preventing these from leaking or being flushed out by high water flow, until these are released by firmly wringing out the foam absorbent.
(4) It can be reused – 100 times or more; after wringing out the oil, it can immediately be redeployed to continue absorbing and removing further oil.
(5) When it eventually requires replacement, it can be safely incinerated without producing any toxic combustion products or land-filled as it is biodegradable.
The foam will absorb and remove from water virtually all oils and liquid hydrocarbons including crude oil, refined fuel oils, gasoline, diesel, kerosene, jet fuel, lubricants, transmission and hydraulic fluids, and a wide range of organic chemicals including many that are toxic or carcinogenic. It will even absorb natural animal, fish and vegetable oils.
The Sponge Foam has already been used very successfully by BP in the Gulf of Mexico to help clean-up the oil spill there and in China to help clean-up the worst ever spill in that nation’s history following a pipeline explosion in the Port of Dalian that caused millions of gallons of oil to escape into the Yellow Sea and onto beaches.
Yet despite these major oil spills, the greatest threat to the environment is surprisingly not such incidents but the constant escape of oil fuels and lubricants from millions of cars and trucks onto roadways and parking lots. From there, these toxic contaminants are swept by the next rainfall into the nearest storm water drain which usually discharges, untreated, into a water course, lake or wetland area.
The US Environmental Protection Agency has estimated that 180 Million gallons of oil escape each year into the US environment alone. That’s equivalent to 16 Exxon Valdez spills or one BP Gulf catastrophe every year! Individually, each leaking vehicle does not amount to much but collectively and cumulatively - drip by drip – these nonpoint sources constitute a continuous “torrent” of pollution that is steadily poisoning the nation’s precious water resources.
One quart of carelessly discarded or leaked motor oil will pollute 250,000 gallons of fresh water. The EPA states that 40% of water resources in the USA are now too polluted to safely use for drinking water supplies, fishing or swimming. 60% of this pollution comes from largely untreated storm water and snow melt run-off where oils are a major component of the contamination.
If our products are deployed extensively in manholes, catch basins, detention ponds and storm drains, this major environmental problem of oil pollution could be largely eradicated – and at a very affordable cost. Until the development of this highly effective, water repellent and reusable new oil absorbent material there was no simple or economical solution to this problem of untreated stormwater run-off so most existing storm drains have absolutely no protection
All Pacific Clean tech products are designed so that they can be used without causing any blockages or adversely affect water flow in storm drains but will still remove the oil effectively. Most oil from roads and parking lots is swept into the drains in the “first flush” of rainfall during the first 10 minutes of rain. It is important that this oil is captured and held so that it cannot be flushed through the system by heavy and prolonged downpours. Most traditional oil separators and traps suffer from this “flush-through” effect in conditions of heavy rainfall or flooding. The Pacific Clean Tech sponge will securely hold the captured oil until it can be recovered.
One product, can be deployed in any drain and has long flexible tentacles with a high surface area. This will absorb oil rapidly but not absorb any water and will not cause a blockage or impede flow. It lies in the base of the drainage pipe but is tethered securely at the nearest manhole and can easily be pulled out using the tough nylon tethering line for removal of the captured oil in a special wringer. Then it can immediately be redeployed. Servicing the Pacific Clean Tech Sponges takes only a few minutes and it can be reused 100 times or more. Thus the cost per use is very low and all Pacific Clean Tech oil removal products are easier to use, more effective and cheaper than any other technology.
The captured oil is collected in drums for recycling. Unlike conventional one-time-use absorbents, there is no need to replace the absorbent each time or pay for the transport and disposal of the soiled absorbents as toxic waste. As a recyclable material, the drums of oil collected can be legally transported in any suitable vehicle without the need for toxic waste handling licenses or special personnel. When the Pacific Clean Tech sponge eventually needs replacing it can simply be incinerated without producing any toxic combustion products or land-filled as it is biodegradable. It is the most eco-friendly oil absorbent available.
The technology is infinitely scaleable from removing oil in a single contaminated well or garden pond to remediation of a large lake, wetland, harbor or complete drainage system. Wherever oil and hydrocarbons can escape into the environment, from vehicles, aircraft, ships and boats, machinery, effluent discharges and leaking storage tanks, there is a need for our sponge products.
