About

Introduction:

New Pass is a major water thorofare on the west coast of Florida, and leads into the city of Sarasota from the Gulf of Mexico. The New Pass Bascule Bridge carries Gulf of Mexico Drive across the pass about one nautical mile in from the entrance.

Navigating the Bridge:

Use NOAA Chart 11425.

The New Pass Bascule Bridge has a closed vertical clearance of 23 feet, with 90 feet of horizontal clearance at the center span. New Pass itself has a controlling depth of 4.5 feet, and becomes deeper as you progress eastward. None of the buoys in the inlet are marked as the USCG continually moves them to reflect the current position of the deepest water.

Bridge Schedule:

This bridge operates on a restricted schedule. From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., the bridge opens on the hour and every 20 minutes thereafter. The bridge opens on demand at all other times.

Depending on schedule, the bridge can be opened by horn signal (one long, one short) or by hailing the bridge tender on VHF Channel 09. (All bridges in the state of Florida must be hailed on VHF Channel 09.)

Local Notices to Mariners:

Local Notices to Mariners are available online from the U.S. Coast Guard.
