We enjoyed our stay at the Morningstar Southport. The dockhands were great. All the docks are new. Marina is an easy walk into Southport, which is a wonderful town to visit. Wifi was poor. Wifi signal was strong, but data speed was very slow, when it worked at all. Being "connected without internet" was frequent. We also thought the bathrooms were not up to par with other marinas. I wanted to purchase diesel. I did not because the fuel hose nozzles that were available did not fit into my deck fill. I had never had such a problem before. Fortunately I had plenty of fuel to continue my journey and get fuel elsewhere.
Nice facility, knowledgeable dockhands,helpful shuttle into town, and convenient to downtown. We walked from megadock to heart of Charleston more than once. Only complaint is the marina is exposed to passing boat wakes. Most boaters were polite with their wakes, but there are always some who pass closely generating excessive wakes.
I have been using Washburns Boat Yard for many years for bottom and mechanical work, and have always been very satisfied with the people and the work. Spring 2023 I had Washburn apply bottom paint and PropSpeed to my boat as part of my preparation to begin the Great Loop. Today after 10 months of Looping I had a Brunswick GA diver inspect my hull and running gear. Noting the clean hull and propeller, the diver complimented my paint application work. I told the diver it was done by Washburns Boatyard.
The marina facilities are very good. The wifi worked well at slip 13. The town is a fun place to visit. There are nice beaches on both sides of the marina. The fairways in the marina are tight. This marina should not be labelled a harbor-of-refuge. They will reserve every slip in the marina, so none will be available for boaters desperate for weather refuge. They will tell you to leave at the end of your reserved nights, regardless of weather.
Onancock Wharf is a favorite place to visit. The facility is very nice. A free laundry is available. Onancock is pretty little town. It is a great place to walk around. A short walk away is the Corner Bakery with excellent donuts (closed Sunday and Monday).
