About

Introduction:

Spanish Cay is a large private island off the northern and of LIttle Abaco Island on the Sea of Abaco. If you stay at the marina here, you are free to explore the island and use the resort’s facilities. If not, the island is off limits. There is anchorage at the north end of the island, but you may not go ashore, and you may be asked to leave, even though technically, anchoring is legal here. Spanish Cay is 39 miles northwest of Marsh Harbour and 27 miles east of Grand Bahama Island.

Navigating the Water:

The primary hazard to navigation around Spanish Cay is a long, 3- to 4-foot deep shoal that extends to the southwest off the south end of the island. This shoal is visible as a long patch of light colored water in the image above in the upper right hand corner.

Spanish Cay is a private resort island, and as such, the marina is the only access point to the island. Approach depths (clear of the aforementioned reef) are 8 to 10 feet, and a stone breakwall protects the marina from most directions.

At the northern and of the island is a small cove with 4 feet of depth at the entrance and inside, but it is no surprise that the ownership of the island would rather boats not anchor here. They cannot stop you from doing it, but they will also let you know that you cannot step foot on the island unless you are a guest. Your mileage may vary.

Local Notices to Mariners:

See our “Local Notices to Mariners” blog for updates on the latest conditions and advisories for this area.

Things To Do/Local Events:

Aside from snorkeling, beach combing, sailing, and other water activities, there is an active and vibrant calendar of other scheduled events in the Abacos. See our “Helpful Links” section below for a detailed calendar of events.

Transportation:

Spanish Cay is owned by a private entity, but it has a 5,000-foot-long runway that allows small civil aircraft to land here. Major commercial jet service is available at the Marsh Harbour International Airport, which is 39 miles away to the southeast. Another small airport is located on Treasure Cay, which is only 14 miles away to the south.
