About

Introduction:

Fat Hogs and East End bays share a common entrance and are located on the east side of Tortola southwest of Beef Island and north of Buck Island. Fat Hogs Bay is 8 miles west of Virgin Gorda and 6 miles north of Peters Island.

Inside the bays are a variety of marine facilities (primarily in East End Bay), and there is also a mooring field and an area to anchor out, if you wish.

Navigating the Water:

Fat Hogs and East End bays are approached from the east via the Sir Francis Drake Channel. On approach, leave Buck Island to port, and then pick up the flashing green buoy that marks the reef in the southern end of the bay, while making sure you allow adequate room around the flashing white light at Red Rock on the northern end of the entrance.

Once inside, you can head into the anchorage in East End Bay, or make arrangements to tie up at one of the three marinas here. There is a mooring field that is maintained by one of the local marinas (first-come, first-served), or you can also drop the hook in nine feet of water off the marinas.

Local Notices to Mariners:

See our “Local Notices to Mariners” blog for updates on the latest conditions and advisories for this area.

Things To Do/Local Events:

For a detailed calendar of events for the Tortola area, see the “Helpful Links” section below.

Transportation:

Primary air transportation is provided by the Beef Island Airport, which is located on the east end of Tortola. From here you can catch connecting flights to larger commercial airports such as San Juan, which is about 100 miles to the west. Taxi service to the airport is available on most of the island, or you can arrange for (expensive) regional shuttles from the airport itself.
