About

Introduction:

Governors Creek is home to the Cayman Islands Yacht Club, one of the finest full-service facilities on Grand Cayman Island. Located on the western side of North Sound, Governors Creek is conveniently located only 3 miles from the ocean inlet into North Sound itself. Visitors must first check in through customs in Georgetown upon arrival.

Navigating the Water:

First and foremost, if you are just arriving into Grand Cayman from offshore, you must notify “Port Secuirty” on VHF Channel 16 when you are within 10 miles of the island and notify them of your intent and destination. Once you have that bit of protocol handled, you will need to negotiate the entrance to North Sound, which is located between Bakers cay and Eisherman’s Rock on the north side of Grand Cayman.

From N19 24.462 W81 19.684, head south toward the North Sound Inlet on a course of 203 true for three miles. Keep in mind that the entrance to North Sound is ever-changing, and there are no marks to help guide you in. The deepest water is located toward Bakers Cay, and the course above should help lead you through the deeper water. You must however, keep a vigilant lookout for coral outcrops and mind your depth sounder carefully.

Once inside North Sound and clear of the entrance, a course of around 223 degrees true should put you near the entrance to Governors Creek. Keep in mind that the northwest side of the course is lined with shoals, and you will want to favor a more southeast course if depths shallow up during your progress across north Sound. The entrance is about three miles from the North Sound entrance at Bakers Cay.

As you can see in the image above, you are not going to get much help in the way of aids to navigation when entering Governors Creek. Simply shoot for the middle and head on in. Although charts dictate depths of two feet in places, four- to six-foot depths are more the rule.

Once you have cleared the inlet into Governors Creek head about a quarter-mile west, and then turn to starboard. The Cayman Islands Yacht Club will be visible directly ahead of you. The entire Governors Creek area near the inlet is available for use as an anchorage and depths range from five to seven feet.
