Introduction:

Located on Catalina Island about 21 nautical miles south of Los Angeles, Avalon Bay is the main entry and departure point for visitors to the island. The Catalina Express and Catalina Flyer ferry services land here, and an extensive privately run mooring field welcomes visiting boaters.

Santa Catalina Island represents a refreshing and unusual contrast to the densely populated urban areas of Southern California. In order to preserve this valuable open space for public enjoyment, the Wrigley Family deeded approximately 88 percent of the island in 1975 to the nonprofit Catalina Island Conservancy. The Santa Catalina Island Company, established in 1894, is the principal landowner of the remaining private land and focuses on preserving the island’s unique charm and character. Catalina Island is part of Los Angeles County. Located 22 miles off the California mainland, the island comprises 76 square miles and boasts 52 miles of spectacular coastline. The island consists of two quaint commercial centers: Avalon, population 3,500, and Two Harbors, population 100.

Navigating the Water:

Use NOAA Chart 18746.

Avalon Bay is about a 21-mile voyage south from Los Angeles. Approach from the north. Flashing green “1” and flashing red “2” mark the west and east breakwaters that enclose Avalon Bay. Depths inside are in the 18-foot range and most of the bay is covered with privately run moorings.

A small channel is left open between the moorings for the two ferries that bring visitors to the island on a regular schedule year-round.
