The image above is of the Kissimmee River where it empties into Lake Okeechobee southwest of Taylor Creek and Eagle Bay. Thought not navigable above a bridge (removable span), the Kissimee River is an important part of the South Florida Water System, flowing south for almost 100 miles from Orlando.

Lake Okeechobee is one of the most popular largemouth bass fishing holes in the United State, which is evidenced above by the large gathering of local boats hoping to hook “the big one.” Taylor Creek, which is to the northwest, has three good marinas, most of which cater to fishermen.

The mouth of the Kissimmee River can be reach via cross-lake route from Port Mayaca by setting a course of 311 degrees magnetic for a distance of about 20 miles. Depths across the lake range from nine to 12 feet, but are very dependent on current water conditions. During periods of low water, shoal areas may develop, so be sure to inquire in Port Mayaca about water conditions in the lake before crossing.
