Introduction:
Atlantic Highlands is a cozy little boating village located on the south end of Sandy Hook Bay about three miles south of Sandy Hook itself. Atlantic Highlands is 20 miles south of The Battery on Lower Manhattan and 25 miles north of the Shark River Inlet on the New Jersey Coast.

Moorings in the harbor are administered by the yacht club here, and you may be able to arrange for transient slips on a reciprocal basis. The large municipal marina has plenty of transient space, but reservations are suggested for extended stays.

Navigating the Water:
Use NOAA Charts 12324 and 12327.

From the north at Sandy Hook, pick up flashing green gong buoy “17” off Sandy Hook Channel, and then set a course to the south to pick up the flashing white light (unnumbered) on the outer jetty of the Atlantic Highlands Harbor about three miles to the south.

The is the preferred harbor to wait out weather and tide for either a northerly journey into New York City, or an offshore jaunt to locales farther north along the Long Island Coast. Just inside the harbor breakwater is an extensive mooring field (anchoring available where space allows), and farther in are two extensive marine facilities.

The municipal marina here has more than 450 slips, some of which are set aside for transient guests. If you plan to stay longer than one evening, we recommend calling ahead for reservations. Gas and diesel fuel are available here, as are shower facilities and restrooms. Anchored boats can use these facilities for a daily access fee, if desired. The yacht club here rents the moorings in the harbor, and this fee includes use of their facilities ashore.
