Fire Damages Mattapoisett Boatyard

Mattapoisett Boatyard on Buzzards Bay in Massachusetts experienced a devastating fire on Friday, August 19.

The boatyard is located at 32 Neds Point Road in Mattapoisett. Five buildings were lost in the fire.

A message on the boatyard’s Facebook page states that 20 boats also were lost and nearly 40 vehicles were either totally burned or significantly damaged. The message further reads: “The cleanup has already begun. To be sure there is no misunderstanding, we plan to come back from this better and stronger! The Boatyard will be here for you!”

A staff member of the boatyard was seriously injured in the fire, but good news was shared on the boatyard’s Facebook page this week: “We are happy to share that Phil M is out of the ICU and in good spirits. After talking to Phil’s partner, Michelle, they feel as though so much has been contributed and they cannot express their gratitude to the outpouring of support. Phil also wants everyone to know the efforts of the 4 MBY employees who rescued him clearly saved his life. They put their lives on the line to save his and that is truly heroic.”

Rhode Island Marine Trade Association (RIMTA) member Tim Moll has launched a Tool Drive to support the boatyard‘s 15 technicians and yard staff as they rebuild their tool sets and get back to work. “Having the right tools will get the MBY crew back to work as soon as possible. Please consider donating new or gently used professional quality tools,” Tim Moll writes in a message from RIMTA. He said he will also pick up tool donations; contact him at [email protected] or (508) 254-4500. Or drop off tools now at the trailer at 67 North Street, Mattapoisett, or at Triad Boatworks on Park St. Tim will also park the trailer at the Mattapoisett town wharf on Saturday, August 27, from noon to 5:00 p.m.

To make a financial donation in lieu of tools, please contribute at MBY’s Go Fund Me page by clicking here.

Dockwa is donating $1,000 Dockwa Dollars to support the boatyard and looks forward to contributing to future efforts to help, including a silent auction tentatively planned for October.
