Once a large industrial center, Port Jefferson is now a major yachting destination on Long Island Sound. Port Jefferson is located on the north shore of Long Island about 16 miles southeast of Bridgeport, CT, and 14 miles east of Northport.

Ashore in the town of Port Jefferson you will find ample opportunities for provisioning in a relaxed and laid back atmosphere. There are hundred of moorings in the harbor and seven marine facilities on the waterfront here.

The start of the approach to Port Jefferson Harbor begins at red and white buoy “PJ,” on Long Island Sound about three miles northwest of the breakwatered opening to Port Jefferson Harbor. If you are approaching from the east, pay special attention to Mount Misery Shoal, marked by green can “11.”

Heading southeast from red and white Morse (A) buoy “PJ,” chart a course for the opening to Port Jefferson Harbor and pick up flashing green buoy “1” and flashing red bell buoy “2,” making sure not to cut either of them on the inside (there is shoaling on the outside of each of these buoys). Past these two markers you will see the breakwaters to the harbor. The west breakwater is marked with flashing red “2A,” and the east end is marked with a flashing white fixed light (unnumbered).

Farther in, you will find a series of lighted and unlighted buoys that lead you in the two-mile length of the harbor to the Port Jefferson waterfront. There are seven marine facilities on the Port Jefferson waterfront, and two of them have slips available for transients. There are moorings on the east side of the harbor.
