Located just upriver form the famous Sing Sing Prison, the town of Haverstraw and its protected yacht basin are situated on Haverstraw Bay, the widest portion of the Hudson River along its entire length. Haverstraw is 38 miles form the Battery in Manhattan and 18 miles downstream from the town of Newburgh.

The name of Haverstraw is one of the oldest in the geography of North America. The word is Dutch and it first appeared on a map in 1616. It was originally written "Haverstroo" and means oat straw, descriptive of the waving straw of the river meadows.

Heading north or south along the Hudson River above Croton Point, the town of Haverstraw and its protected yacht basin are visible on the west shore of the river just south of Bowline Point. If approaching from the north, exit the Hudson River channel at flashing green buoy “23,” and then head in toward the opening of the basin, making sure to avoid the loading pier and pilings on the north and south side of the inlet, respectively (there are no aids to navigation into the harbor off the Hudson River).

Arriving from the south, chart a course to the northwest from quick flashing red buoy “22” into the harbor inlet, paying close attention to the shallow four-foot-deep spots near the charted obstruction south of the harbor opening.

Inside the harbor are two marine facilities. One of the marinas accepts transient guests and has a lift for haul-outs and major repairs, while the other will not accept transients, but has equipment to facilitate minor repairs.
