Introduction:
One of two rivers that split off the New Inlet south of Scituate, the South River, as its name suggests, bends southward for two miles to the town of Ferry Hill, where marina accommodations can be had with advance reservations. There is also a somewhat protected anchorage at the South River's confluence with the New Inlet, but strong currents and a hard sand bottom can make an anchor set challenging. Both rivers are extremely popular among canoeists and kayakers who enjoy exploring the twisty channels along the green marsh beds.

Navigating the Water:
Use NOAA Chart 13267.

Red and white bell buoy "NI" marks the ocean approach to the New Inlet, where the South River is located. From the ocean buoy, set a course for red nun "2," and then head farther in toward green can "3" and red nun "4."

Be advised that the mouth of the South River at New Inlet has silted over in spots and there are some spots with depths of two feet or less. Once you have reached red nun "8" in the New Inlet, you can start your southward passage into the South River. Keep an eye out for the anchored boats near the entrance.

Local Notices to Mariners:
Local Notices to Mariners are now exclusively available online from the U.S. Coast Guard.
