Introduction:
Located at Nubble Point, just east of Cape Neddick, the Cape Neddick Lighthouse is constructed of cast iron and brick, and has a 78-year-old fouth order Fresnel lens beaming an occulting red three-second on, three-second off pattern. The light stands 41 feet above the water. Boon Island Lighthouse is visible from the lighthouse some nine miles offshore.

History:
The lighthouse was constructed here in 1897, and automated in 1987. A keeper’s house, boathouse, oil house and storage building still stand on the property today. Of particular interest, the Cape Neddick lighthouse had a few periods of darkness in its long history due to the viciously cold winds of the Atlantic Ocean. The cold slowed the flow of oil to the light so extremely as to extinguish its flame many times until the light was electrified in 1938.
