“Just then from one of the boats tied up at BROWN’S dock, a rocket rose with a whoosh high into the sky and burst with a pop to light up the channel”
Ernest Hemingway “Islands in the Stream”

Imagine an address at the harbour entrance of historic Alice Town so exclusive that only 17 exist in Bimini’s most renowned port of call. Now imagine, sipping cocktails at sunset, from your terrace overlooking your boat docked in Bimini Harbour, where Ernest Hemingway engaged in sport-fishing and basked in inspiration penning “Islands in the Stream.”

As the first entrance in the harbour, Browns is the only residential and vacation destination close to downtown restaurants, lounges, hotels, the marina, ferry dock, airport, Bimini’s museum and more.

Home to the best conch & lobster pizza, Bahama Mammas and the famous ring toss game, The End of the World Saloon in Bimini is a world-renowned watering hole where patrons go to watch the sun set, sink their toes in the sand and enjoy high octane spirits and native foods, including fresh caught fish and conch. A landmark pit stop for the Caribbean bound, The End of The World Saloon was a favorite haunt of Adam Clayton Powell who entertained visiting press corps at this famous hideaway.

In addition to live music on the water (everything from calypso to Lynyrd Skynyrd), the End of the World Saloon proudly collects and displays patrons’ undergarment souvenirs. What goes on in Bimini, often stays in Bimini, but look close as the drunken castoffs are often autographed before being pinned to the walls and ceiling.

Today, the famous drinks keep flowing under the supervision of Sara Lee, who operates The End of the World Saloon as if the patrons were guests in her own living room. You won’t want to order another round before visiting this right of passage in downtown Alice Town.

Big Johns Hotel

Nestled in Bimini’s historic center of Alice Town, the original Big John’s was a popular watering hole during prohibition but was later closed down. After a tragic fi re destroyed the world famous Compleat Angler bar a few months ago, townspeople appealed to Bimini Heritage Ltd. to include the restoration of Big John’s in their Heritage Village development plans.

“It was a project for the community by the community from the very beginning,” said I. Stanley Levine, a partner of Bimini Heritage Ltd. who has enjoyed visiting the island for the last 50 years. “Big John’s pays tribute to the history of Alice Town by carefully preserving the integrity of the community as well as its historic allure and architectural design. In addition, the development of our Heritage Village serves as a catalyst for economic redevelopment.”

Rich with local flavor, Big John’s Conch Shell Bar employs many of the Compleat Angler’s familiar faces including the managers, bartenders and the band, The Hypnotics, who worked there for close to 20 years.

Setting a new standard in Bimini’s hotel accommodations, the seven fully-renovated rooms perched atop of Big John’s Conch Shell Bar provide guests with the luxuries of a boutique hotel while maintaining the charm of island living in a world-class fi shing destination.

This casual and relaxing retreat boasts open fl oor plans and sliding glass doors that reveal breathtaking views of Bimini’s beautiful bay front. Antique nautical furniture and closets fashioned from cargo netting pay tribute to the landmark’s historic quarters. Modern upgrades include 32 inch LCD television screens, new air conditioning systems and furnishings, fi ne linens and aromatherapy soaps.

Big John’s Conch Shell Bar is a casual lounge with an island atmosphere enhanced with plasma high-defi nition satellite television. Centrally located seating allows patrons to watch their favorite televised sporting events, as well as steal panoramic views of the bay when they are not testing their skills at the ring toss game, Bimini’s signature amusement.
