Located at Intracoastal Waterway Mile 1065.9, this bridge has a closed vertical clearance of 55 feet and a horizontal clearance of 99 feet in the center span. The bridge operates on a restricted opening schedule, opening only on the hour and half hour from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on demand at all other times.
Located among the buzz and bristle of some of Fort Lauderdales finest and biggest marinas, the 17th Street Bascule Bridge is almost as much fun to watch from the bridge itself, as from the water, as there always seems to be a procession of mega-yachts and recreational craft making their way under it.
Depending on schedule, the bridge can be opened by horn signal (one long, one short) or by hailing the bridge tender on VHF Channel 09. (All bridges in the state of Florida must be hailed on VHF Channel 09.)
Local Notices to Mariners are available online from the U.S. Coast Guard.
