Introduction:
Southern Harbor is a convenient and generally well-protected anchorage on North Haven Island off of the Fox Island Thorofare. Protected from every direction except he southeast, this is a popular place for cruiser to stop for the night before continuing on through Fox Island Thorofare. Depths range from eight to 16 feet, and the holding is excellent in a sand/mud bottom.

Navigating the Water:
Use NOAA Chart 13305.

Approach Fox Island Thorofare from the southwest, picking up read and white Morse (A) buoy “FT” and using Browns Head Light to guide you in. (The light has two red sectors that let you know when you have strayed out of the channel.)

After about two miles, turn north and round red nun “24” to port. From here, head toward Cross Island Ledge, making sure to give it room, and then steer into Southern Harbor. Mind the 12-foot deep ledge in the middle of the channel.
