The Territory

The origins of the town of Rodi are very antique and the historical sources attribute it's foundation to the first settlement of the village, the people of Rodi Argivi, skilful explorers which landed on the coasts of the Gargano during the 8th century B.C.

The city's sailing vocation, further developed by the Romans, identifies the port of Rodi as Portus Gamae, which ruins result evident until the 19th century although even today under the Castle we can find ruins of the defensive walls and the trapdoor that leads to the Tabularium, which during the Roman Age was a room where goods in transit were registered being that Rodi was the only access in the ancient times to the sea of the land of the Gargano.

As the majority of the towns on the Adriatic coast, during the ages it suffered different dominations and at the fall of the Roman Empire it went under the control of the Goths in 485 A.D. as well as the Saracens.

Controlled by the Venetians in the 8th century, later it becomes domain of Alfonso of Aragon until the Unity of Italy.

The alternation of the people during centuries has enriched the territory with numerous monumental testimonies and traditions which still survive today in the typical gastronomy of the territory and the village festivals, with recalls of the noble origins of the town.

Today Rodi Garganico, which takes root on a rocky spur, is a typical Mediterranean village that, although time goes by, always keeps the appeal that impressed the Rodii Argivi.

We are referring to the natural environment that is still remarkably preserved, it's the natural frame of the city immerged in a luxurious nature made of olive trees and citrus orchids of the Arabic domination which in the 19th century made the city of Rodi famous abroad for the extraordinary organoleptic characteristics of its citrus fruits.

From what today is the actual bottom part of the jetty of the new port, ships departed towards America full of lemons, oranges and oil, extraordinary products of the Gargano land today, exalted together with other outstanding products such as Caciocavallo cheese of the Slow Food presidium.

To all the ship owners transiting through the new Touristic Port, Rodi wants to continue offering the magical endless atmospheres besides the breathtaking panorama and fine sanded beaches, preserving the tradition of hospitality which distinguishes the people of the Gargano.
