Introduction:

The city of Melbourne is located off the Indian River on the East Coast of Florida about 26 miles south of Cape Canaveral and 18 miles northwest of the Sebastian Inlet. Melbourne, and its sister city Eau Gallie to the north, are both popular stopover points for boater traveling the Intracoastal Waterway. There is a good marina on the harbor and provisioning possibilities ashore.

Navigating the Water:

Use NOAA Chart 11472.

From the Intracoastal Waterway (Indian River) south of the Melbourne Bridge (65-foot fixed vertical clearance), exit the channel at red daybeacon “6,” and then set a course for green daybeacon “1” and red daybeacon “2,” which both mark the beginning of the entrance channel into Melbourne Harbor/Crane Creek.

Green daybeacon “1” and red daybeacon “2” are followed by green daybeacon “3,” red daybeacon “4,” green daybeacon “5,” and red daybeacon “6” before the turn into the harbor.Quick flashing green “7” and red daybeacon “8” are the last aids to navigation into the harbor. The Melbourne Harbor Marina is located just past the markers and runs up to the bascule bridge. Anchoring is not encouraged because of the narrow nature of the harbor.

Local Notices to Mariners:

Local Notices to Mariners are available online from the U.S. Coast Guard.
