Introduction:
Port Henry is located on the southern portion of Lake Champlain where its river-like feel transforms into more like that of a lake at Crown Point. Port Henry is 47 miles south of Plattsburgh and 90 miles north of Albany. Port Henry was once primarily a mining town (you can see a large mound of mine spoil behind the town when you approach), but today its economy focuses on tourism and light manufacturing. Transient dockage, haul-out, repairs, gas and anchorage are available at the town marina down by the waterfront (visible in the image above).

Navigating the Water:
Use NOAA Chart 14784.

The primary lighted aid to navigation into Port Henry is the Capital Pier Light (flashing red) on the north side of the town, but red nun “2” marks the actual entrance to the waterfront. Although it might be tempting to shortcut red nun “2” to the north, be aware that there are several small rock ledges with depths of two feet or less that extend southward from the Canal Pier Light. If you are approaching from the north, stay clear of flashing green buoy “55,” which marks a shoal that creeps out into the lake from Crane Point, just across the lake from Port Henry.

Once you have cleared red nun “2,” you can follow the town waterfront to the north to stay in deep water. There is a large marina down on the waterfront with all types of services and a small anchorage out in front.

Local Notices to Mariners:
Local Notices to Mariners are now exclusively available online from the U.S. Coast Guard.
