Introduction:
Conveniently located near the Hewanorra International Airport, Vieux Fort, and Vieux Fort Bay are a little getaway on the extreme southern tip of the island of St. Lucia. Vieux Bay is a 27-mile journey around St. Lucia from Castries, which is on the west coast of the island, and 34 miles from Galet Bay, which lies on the upper eastern side of the island.

Vieux Fort is mainly a fishing and industrial port/harbor and it even has its own enclosed basin where the local fisherman tie up. You, too can tie up here for a fee if you are lucky, but keep in mind that there are no services associated with your fee. The docks are quite barren of amenities, but well protected by the man-made breakwaters.

Anchorage is available on the south side of Vieux Fort Harbor, just southwest of the port loading dock, which is visible in the image above on the right (east) side of the harbor. Additional space to drop the hook is located just off the man-made fisherman’s harbor. Anchoring depths in both locales are about 10 to 15 feet. Strong west winds make riding the hook uncomfortable in Vieux Fort Harbor.

Navigating the Water:
As with most of the open harbors on St, Lucia, Vieux Fort Harbor is easy to enter. A simple course from the west will bring you into the center of the harbor, and from here, you can decide whether to head toward one of the aforementioned anchorages or toward the fisherman’s wharf in the town of Fort Vieux itself.

Ashore, there are plenty of shopping markets and stores for provisioning and stocking up. Fuel is a bit hard to some by, and you will most likely have to tote some of it from a shoreside locale. Many restaurants of varying flavors are also available

Things To Do/Local Events:
Besides the obvious water related activities of sailing, cruising, fishing, and beach-going, the island has a wide variety of activities ashore to please most every taste. For a detailed calendar of events, check out the “Helpful Links” section below.

Transportation:
There are two airports on the island: Hewanorra International Airport at Vieux Fort (UVF) is located close by and George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU) which adorns a pleasant coastline on the outskirts Castries. Daily non-stop service is available from Miami, New York City, London, and several other international cities.
