Introduction:

Road Town is the capital of the British Virgin Islands and is located on Road Harbour, the largest natural harbor on the island of Tortola. Additionally, as the capital, Road Town is one of the most developed and best equipped harbors in all of the Virgin Islands. There are about seven marinas here, and most all of them accept transient guests at their slips.

Off the southwest and north ends of the harbor there are two anchorage and mooring areas where one can drop the hook, or pick up a mooring (most are administered by the marina in the specific locale.

Navigating the Water:

Road Harbour is approached from the south or west via the Sir Francis Drake Passage. On approach, two buoys mark the east and west ends of the harbor. At Burt Point on the west side of the harbor, a flashing green buoy marks a reef extending east into the harbor, while on the east side of Road Harbour, a flashing red buoy marks Scotch Bank.

For facilities, Fort Burt Marina is the closest marina to the Road Harbour entrance and is located on the west side of the harbor behind Burt Point. There is also a mooring field and anchorage here just outside the marina entrance.

Farther back in the harbor are a variety of facilities, many of which are tucked behind the cruise ship terminal and Wickmans Cay. These areas also have mooring fields and anchorage space on a first-come, first-served basis.
