Introduction:

Barnstable Harbor is situated 10 miles east of the Cape Cod Canal on the northern shore of Cape Cod it is a remote but important harbor on Cape Cod Bay. Barnstable is part of the seven-village scheme that makes up the Town of Barnstable which includes Barnstable, West Barnstable, Marstons Mills, Cotuit, Osterville, Centerville and Hyannis.

Barnstable and its villages are the hub of Cape Cod and display the beauty of this area -- especially in the summer months.


Navigating the Water:

Use NOAA Chart 13251.

Barnstable is reached through a long winding passage leading off from Cape Cod Bay. The approach is first marked by a flashing red bell buoy, and is further marked with can a nun buoys, which mark the tidal shoals that are bare at low tide.

Pay close attention to Beach Point and Horseshoe Shoal as you work your way south to Barnstable proper. A town wharf and a couple of marinas with service are available inside Blish Point.

History:

Barnstable was one of the earliest settlements in the Plymouth Colony. Founded by Reverend Joseph Hull, Barnstable’s s name comes from Barnstaple, England. Many of the early settlers found work in agriculture and fishing and Barnstable soon became an very important port for commerce. There were over 800 ships in Barnstable Harbor by the late 1800’s.

Later into the 1900’s Barnstable became a very popular tourist destination in the United States. Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Grover Cleveland spent their summers here as well as the entire Kennedy Family. Barnstable is home to many great restaurants, shops, and attractions that attract tourists during all months of the year.

Transportation:

Cape Air/Nantucket Airlines at the Barnstable Municipal Airport services direct flights to and from Boston, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. There are other airlines with direct flights to and from Newark and New York.

Plymouth & Brockton Bus Company provides hourly, scheduled motorcoach service between Logan Airport, downtown Boston, Plymouth and throughout Cape Cod. Charter services available. There are other bus companies providing service from New York, Providence and other locations.

Full-service marine facilities are offered for pleasure craft. There is daily ferry transportation to and from Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Harbor from Hyannis Harbor, on Steamship Authority or on Hy-Line Cruises (Martha's Vineyard service is available May through October).
