Grand Marina - Vladimir D.Oct 04, 2010

Good, safe marina with full services. Very close to West Marine, Pineapple Sails, Svendsen's... Reasonable prices and availability of slips. There is a broker at the marina to help sell a boat. Limited live-aboard slips. 5 stars, but the only down side to the location for sailboats is the distance to the "slot." It's great for sailing the estuary, but it's a lot of upwind tacking against prevailing W winds up the estuary to the Bay with lots of wind shadows, dead zones and port and ferry traffic. So, motor sailing is a must to get to the "slot" within decent time ~1hr. Challenge is that Treasure Island, the Bay Bridge and downtown SF all create wind shadows as you exit into the Bay, so clear wind to get out under sail alone doesn't typically start until you round Treasure Island. This is one of the oldest ACI marinas, built over 25 years ago while this area was part of the socialist Yugoslavia. The marina reflects this. Space and services are limited. It is located close to the few chandleries in town, all of the major sights and markets, as well as the port authority. Fuel dock on the quay opposite the marina. Parking is very limited in front of marina, if arriving by car. Trash and plastic and glass recycling containers are on the street. Lastly, like in many old cities along the Adriatic, Pula's sewage system dates from the ancient Roman days and dumps directly into the harbor. So, odors are a problem. Nice, sheltered anchorages are to the south. For more details about the area, see: http://bloosee.com/r/i3bhLZP

Unfortunately, Luka Kuje is not a marina. It's the town harbor of the town of Liznjan with moorings for local boats and a quay for seasonal fishing vessels docking. While anchoring is permitted in the cove away from the harbor, keep in mind that the sea bottom is covered in endangered sea life: posedonia oceanica (sea grass) and pines nobilis (fragile fan shaped shells). Both of which reproduce very slowly and are easily killed by anchors. So, while a pretty cove and well protected from winds, it's better not to anchor here. There is an old naval quay at the entrance of the cove which can be tied to easily and is the best place to stay in the cove.
