Two bridges cross the Oakland Tidal Canal at this point. One is a railroad lift bridge that remains open at all times except when rail traffic is present, and the other is the Fruitvale Avenue Bascule Bridge, which carries vehicular traffic across the waterway.
Use NOAA Chart 18650.
Fruitvale Bascule Bridge: The bascule bridge carrying vehicular traffic has a 15-foot closed vertical clearance and 72 feet of horizontal at the center span. Open vertical clearance is limited by the parallel railroad lift bridge, which has a 135-foot open vertical clearance.
Railroad Lift Bridge: The railroad bridge has a closed vertical clearance of 13 feet with 200 feet of horizontal clearance in the center span. The open vertical clearance is 135 feet.
The bridge operates on a restricted schedule. From 8 to 9 a.m. and from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., daily, the bridge does not open. The bridge opens on demand at all other times. The bridgetender answers VHF Channel 09 and the phone number for the bridge is 510-533-1126.
The Railroad bridge remains open unless rail traffic is approaching.
