Introduction:

Located on the island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Crown Bay is one of two large natural harbors on the south side of the island off the city of Charlotte Amalie (the other is St. Thomas Harbor, which is located to the east of Crown Bay).

Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, is located on the shores of Crown Bay and St. Thomas Harbor, two of the the busiest ports in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Originally inhabited by the Danish, Charlotte Amalie (the name of a Danish Queen, originally) still retains much of that heritage today, and this can be seen in the local architecture that sometimes looks more European than tropical.

Navigating the Water:

Crown Bay can be reached via two primary passages. The first is East Gregerie Channel (shown above), which runs from the Caribbean Sea between Hassel and Water islands, and then into Crown Bay. The second approach is from the west via (appropriately) West Gregerie Channel, which runs behind Water Island and Sandy Point into Crown Bay.

Crown bay Marina is by far the largest and best equipped facility here and there are a variety of marine-related services available within walking distance of the slips. Anchorage is available on the north side of Water Island in Ruyter Bay.

Local Notices to Mariners:

See our “Local Notices to Mariners” blog for updates on the latest conditions and advisories for this area.

Transportation:

The Cyril E. King International Airport is located only 2 miles from Crown Bay and Charlotte Amalie, and has major commercial service to hundreds of locations on regular schedules. Transportation to and from the airport is most convenient by taxi cab.
