About

Introduction:

The Wando River is located near North Charleston off the Cooper River. The Wando River is primarily used by commercial ships unloading containers at the port terminal just upstream (visible in the image above), but if you need heavy-duty repair services in the Charleston area, then the Wando River May just do the trick. The well-equipped Halsey Cannon Shipyard is located in Wando, SC about nine miles up the Wando River from its confluence with the Cooper River at Remley Point.

Navigating the Water:

Use NOAA Chart 11524.

From the Cooper River heading north, exit the channel at flashing red buoy “42,” and then head toward flashing red buoy “2” just northwest of Remley Point. Flashing green buoy “3” and flashing red buoy “4” pick up the channel farther north at the Wando River Lower Reach. Keep an eye out for commercial traffic unloading cargo and maneuvering in the port area to starboard as you work your way north.

A 138-foot fixed vertical clearance bridge comes next and is the last obstacle you will face all the way up to Wando, about six miles farther on.

Local Notices to Mariners:

Local Notices to Mariners are available online from the U.S. Coast Guard.
