Report Review
Date of Visit: March 17, 2025
Overview:
My experience at Exuma Yacht Club (EYC) in Georgetown was unfortunately disappointing due to misleading information and unexpected charges, though there were some positive aspects worth noting.
Communication & Transparency:
I clearly communicated by phone on March 17 that I needed only a few hours at their dock to take on diesel fuel and water while clearing into the Bahamas for a Temporary Cruising Permit. The staff acknowledged this request but directed me to make a reservation through DOCKWA nonetheless.
Billing Issues:
Despite explicitly stating I would NOT stay overnight and only required a few hours for obtaining my Cruising Permit, fuel, and water, EYC charged a full overnight dockage fee for my 5-hour stay. When I returned the following day to discuss this charge, I was informed that "they only provide fuel and water to vessels that stay at EYC" - information that was not disclosed during my initial communication.
Value:
Due to the unexpected dockage charge, what should have been a routine fuel stop turned into an extremely expensive proposition. The effective cost of diesel ended up at approximately $9.60 per gallon when including all fees incurred.
Staff & Facilities
Ryan, the dock hand, deserves recognition for his excellent service. He was extremely helpful with fueling operations and line handling, providing a positive element to an otherwise frustrating experience.
Current Condition:
It should be noted that EYC is currently in recovery mode from hurricane damage. Renovation work is underway to replace missing deck boards on portions of the docks, and electrical service is being restored throughout the fuel dock area. These ongoing repairs may explain some operational challenges, though they do not justify the lack of transparency regarding fees.
Recommendation:
Boaters seeking to fuel up and clear customs in Georgetown should be aware of EYC's policy that apparently requires payment for a full day's dockage regardless of actual time spent at their facility. This "bait and switch" approach was disappointing and unnecessarily expensive. I would recommend exploring alternative options if possible.
