CAPE BRETON RADIO NEWS HAS LEARNED THE DUNDEE MARINA WILL CLOSE AT THE END OF JUNE, 2012.
STEWART GERMANI, THE PRESIDENT AND C-E-O OF ISLAND RESOURCES, WHICH OWNS THE FACILITY, SAYS THE DUNDEE MARINA HAS STRUGGLED IN THE LAST FIVE OR SIX YEARS. GERMANI SAYS DUNDEE IS SOMEWHAT OFF THE BEATEN TRACK FOR MOST SAILORS COMING THROUGH THE LAKES, AND "WE JUST DON'T SEE THE TRAFFIC THERE AND CERTAINLY THE ECONOMIC CONDITIONS ARE NOT VIABLE FOR THE OPERATION ANY FURTHER." HE SAYS THE NEWPAGE CLOSURE IS HAVING AN EFFECT, AND ADDS ITS TOUGH TO COMPETE WITH LOCAL NOT-FOR-PROFIT MARINAS THAT GET FEDERAL FUNDING. TWO SEASONAL WORKERS WILL BE AFFECTED BY THE CLOSURE.
GERMANI SAYS THEIR COMPANY'S OTHER OPERATION, BADDECK MARINE, HOPES TO ACCOMODATE ANY OF THE BOATS FROM DUNDEE. SINCE THE "FOR SALE" SIGN WENT UP LAST WEEK GERMANI SAYS THERE HAVE BEEN ALOT OF PEOPLE THROUGH THE PROPERTY, SO HE'S HOPEFUL IT WILL BE SOLD. THE MARINA WAS BUILT BY DEVCO IN THE MID-70'S. SOME LOCAL TOURISM OPERATORS WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE MARINA RE-OPENED, TELLING US IT'S AN IMPORTANT PART OF TOURISM INFRASTRUCTURE.

My understanding is that the docks were removed and sold off separately and the property itself has now been sold.
FYI: There is a new marina being built at the other end of the Bras d'Or Lake at Ben Eoin in East Bay, to open in May of 2013, 74 berths. http://beneoinmarina.com/
The location for the new Ben Eoin Marina as shown on the marina's new website is incorrect. The marina is actually being constructed at N45 58 54.43 W60 25 52.18 (N45 58.907 W60 25.884)
