Cape May is a great place to visit. It’s a peninsula at the southern end of New Jersey, with a quaint town and lots of good restaurants. The floating docks at Jersey South Marina are in great shape and the bathroom facilities are very nice. But…. they pack in the boats. They put all transients on their “B” dock, which, when the tide is running, is extremely hazardous to the large boats they try to squeeze in.
As we tried to dock, the thrusters could not move the boat against the current. It was only a matter of luck that the only damage to any vessels caused by us was that we removed a welded burgee pole on another boat. And we even ended up in the wrong slip. The next boat to try to dock abandoned its approach and was luckily pinned to the nearby fuel dock. The following boat had the same problems.
I am glad that nobody videoed our approach and posted it on YouTube.
The dock hands were clearly used to helping struggling boaters and were quite helpful. Two thankfully jumped aboard our boat and helped us tie up. They physically helped all three boats that struggled trying to get in.
I would discourage any large boat (30 feet or more) from trying to dock here at any time other than slack tide. PL May 2025.
