I was thrilled to get a spot in this highly desirable location, and for months enjoyed the camaraderie, get-togethers on the dock, and closeness to downtown. But there is a dark side and I absolutely wouldn’t recommend this place, especially for families. During my stay there for about 8 months, there were multiple violent crimes within the gated marina, domestic situations, open illegal drug use, and problems with theft. Boaters are not allowed to use the hotel amenities and are treated as second-class citizens. When I needed to contact the hotel manager about an issue, he left emails and voicemails unanswered for 3 weeks, and when I finally got a meeting with him he was condescending and rude. The Dockmaster is just doing her job and can’t be faulted, but the marina is NOT run by mariners. It is run by a hotel who just wants to make a few extra bucks and by a few boaters who probably haven’t left the dock since the marina opened and wouldn’t know a sheet line from a halyard. I’ve been in St. Augustine and been a professional mariner and local maritime business owner for years. Most people who I know who have stayed there would never go back for various reasons, myself included.
