We loved the experience. Our friends from the Great Blue Hill Sail & Power Squadron (America's Boating Club) had our end of summer rendezvous there and fun was had by all. It had been about 10 years since I last visited Sandwich Marina and I had forgotten how great it was. Not only the marina (first class) but the surrounding area of Sandwich. Lots of fun things to do, including watching the tortoises (yes really) at the local ice cream shop. Can't wait to go back. I was VERY disappointed. Staying outside of the breakwater was a huge mistake. Too much boat traffic, and the wakes left behind from the inconsiderate (MANY) boaters resulted in a rocky experience us. Plus there doesn't seem to be any monitoring of the no-wake zone in that mooring field. I saw children swimming off the backs of their boats, while very inconsiderate people were zipping back and forth at high speed in their RIBs. They had absolutely no concern for the safety of those children or the wakes they left behind. I will never go back there again. Don't get me wrong. The people at Vineyard Haven Marina were actually great. But the location of that mooring field gets a big thumbs down from me. I recommend going inside Lagoon Pond next time.
I loved the location and Jamestown itself. The marina staff were awesome. The marina itself and and facilities were great as well. But a show stopper for us was the constant un-baffled wake activity that flowed through the marina. Boat after boat would go by and cast a wake that would travel through the marina, sometimes violently knocking the boat all over the place. Nights after 8PM were fine. But then the next morning, it would start up all over again. If the marina could figure out how to baffle all those wakes so that the marina is calm, then the marina would be a 5 star and I would be the first to come back. But until then, I will be staying away.
My only regret is not staying longer. Our stay was only a brief overnighter, and I wanted to enjoy the museum as well.
