One of several bridges that make their way across Biscayne Bay in Miami, the JFK Causeway Bascule Bridge is located at Intracoastal Waterway Mile Marker 1084.6. The bridge has a 25-foot closed vertical clearance with 90 feet of horizontal clearance at the center span. The bridge opens on demand.
Several marine facilities line the Little River south of the bridge, which means a keen lookout for approaching traffic is warranted. Miami bridge tenders are notoriously picky; make sure you hail this bridge exactly as it is named, as there is another bridge on the east side of Biscayne Bay called the 79th Street Causeway Bridge.
The bridge can be opened by horn signal (one long, one short) or by hailing the bridge tender on VHF Channel 09. (All bridges in the state of Florida must be hailed on VHF Channel 09.)
Local Notices to Mariners are available online from the U.S. Coast Guard.
