Introduction:

Centrally located in the heart of Rhode Island, Warwick is an ideal place to stay and explore the Narragansett Bay area. Warwick's central location off Greenwich Bay makes it an ideal destination boating and shoreside travelers alike. The City, Rhode Island's second largest, offers a myriad of activities that will appeal to interests of every kind. As Rhode Island's "Retail Capital", you'll find shopping and restaurants galore.

Warwick is a city made up of over 30 villages, each with its own special identity. Historic houses line the streets, and many of the villages conduct annual festivals, celebrating the history and beauty of the area. Additionally, historic walking tours are a great way to explore the history and lore of the villages of Apponaug and Pawtuxet.

If you enjoy the water, Warwick has more than 39 miles of beautiful coastline with several fresh and salt water beaches and two historic lighthouses, as well as many waterfront restaurants. The city also has 12 marinas and more boat slips, moorings and marine services than any other city or town in the state.

Of the several bodies of water breaking off Greenwich Bay, Warwick Cove is located on the northern end of Greenwich Bay behind Warwick neck and has 10 marinas packed along its shore right to its head. Warwick Cove and the town of Warwick are located 10 miles southeast of Providence and 15 miles northwest of Newport.

History:

Founded by Samuel Gorton in 1642, Warwick has witnessed the major events of American history. Warwick was decimated during King Philip’s War (1675-76) and was the site of the first shot fired of the American Revolution against the British schooner Gaspee. Warwick is also the home of revolutionary war general Nathaniel Greene, George Washington’s second in command, and the Civil War hero of the battle of Gettysburg, General George Sears Greene.

Navigating the Water:

Use NOAA Chart 13221.

From the center of Warwick Cove, pick up flashing green buoy “1” at Round Rock about a half-mile south of Warwick Point. From here, plot a course north to green can “3,” and then green can “1” at the beginning of the approach channel to Warwick Cove. Green can “1” is followed by red nun “2,” red nun “1,” green can “3” and two more unnumbered green can buoys at the sharp turn into the cove (visible in the image above).

Once inside the dogleg turn that protects the cove from southerly winds, the marinas line just about each and every nook and cranny of the cove. Of the 10 marinas here, seven of them have facilities for transient guests. Located in a residential area, Warwick Cove is a great place to tie up for the night, but with its remote location, provisioning can be a challenge without the assistance of a cab or marina courtesy car (if available).
