Introduction:

Centrally located in Florida's famous Gold Coast, today, Pompano Beach covers over 25 square miles in northern Broward County. The City has over 100,000 residents, which jumps to over 150,000 during the winter season, when boaters and vacationers return to enjoy sun. Pompano Beach is located on the southeast coast of Florida, midway between Miami and Palm Beach, (approximately 33 miles to both cities). Minutes from Ft. Lauderdale, Pompano Beach is the third largest of Broward County's 29 municipalities. Conveniently located close to major shopping and attractions, Pompano Beach is only 12 miles from the Ft. Lauderdale / Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades.

History:

The history of the City of Pompano Beach is quite fascinating, as it played an important role in the development of South Florida. The city was at one point the southernmost railroad station of the famous Florida East Coast Railway built by Henry Flagler. In fact, one of the railroad's employees, Frank Sheene, gave the city its name when writing down the name of the fish he had for dinner one evening during his survey of the shoreline – the Florida Pompano.

Navigating the Water:

Use NOAA Chart 11467.

Located near Intracoastal Mile Marker 1055, Pompano Beach is more easily identified by the Hillsboro Inlet, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean here. The inlet is home to the 136-foot-high black and white Hillsboro Lighthouse, which was put into service here in 1907.

As with many areas of the Florida section of the Intracoastal Waterway, you will have drawbridges to contend with in the Hillsboro area. From north to south are the Northeast 14th Street Bridge, Atlantic Boulevard Bridge and at Hillsboro Inlet, the Hillsboro Inlet Bridge. All the drawbridges have restricted openings, so it is best to have an opening schedule handy along with your chart.

The Hillsboro Inlet is dredged frequently and has a controlling depth of eight feet. Use caution on an ebb tide, as currents in the inlet can be tricky.

Local Notices to Mariners:

Local Notices to Mariners are available online from the U.S. Coast Guard.

Things To Do/Local Events:

There are approximately 2,000 tourist accommodations and 200-plus restaurants featuring a wide variety of taste-tempting menus. Pompano Beach offers great golf courses to challenge the skills of the visiting golfer. If you enjoy fishing or diving, Pompano is the ideal location for you. With numerous marinas offering fishing and diving excursions as well as small boat rentals, you may choose to explore the only coral reef system in the continental United States. If all you want to do is sit back and relax, you will love the 3.5 miles of sandy white beach where you can take a stroll or sit and enjoy the cool breezes and gentle waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
