Introduction:

Marine Park is a large anchorage area that is located off the West Coast of Grand Cayman Island on the shores of Georgetown, the capital of the Cayman island chain. Although some cruise ships anchor off the South Coast of Grand Cayman Island when winds are out of the wrong direction, you can see from the image above that the Marine Park anchorage is preferred.

Navigating the Water:

This is the center of Georgetown, and the center of the Cayman Island Chain’s political, tourist and economic world. If you are just arriving into the Cayman Islands, this is where you will need to clear through customs. The customs office is located on a large pier just east of the Marine Park anchorage. When you are on approach to Grand Cayman, you must make a call to Port Security on VHF CHannel 16 when you are 10 miles away from the island. Once you have arrived, radio again, and you will receive instructions for clearing through customs

Most boats anchor in Marin Park, as there are no real marinas on the west side of the island. If you are in need of tie up facilities, head north up and around Conch Point, and then into North Sound after you have cleared through customs. Be sure to budget enough time if arriving late in the day; it is a 20-mile voyage up and into North Sound.

Local Notices to Mariners:

See our “Local Notices to Mariners” blog for updates on the latest conditions and advisories for this area.

Transportation:

Owen Roberts International Airport is located about 2 miles southeast of the center of Georgetown on the southern side of North Sound. The airport has regularly scheduled commercial jet service from carriers like United, US Airways, American and Cayman Airways. Taxi cab service is available across much of the island and shuttle service can be arranged to/from by contacting the airport directly.
