North Haven Town Harbor |
The lighthouse and light station were constructed here in 1890, and eventually, the United States Coast Guard automated the lighthouse in 1963, replacing the original fourth order Fresnel lens with a 250mm acrylic optic.
Use NOAA Chart 13305.
The Fox Islands Thorofare is a twisting and challenging passage that allows transit between North Haven and Vinalhaven islands without farther passage to the north or south. East Penobscot Bay is on the west entrance to the Thorofare, while the east side empties into Isle a Haut Bay.
The Fox Islands Thorofare is loaded with rock ledges and outcroppings that demand you utmost respect. Luckily, most of these are marked, but some are not. Keep a close eye on the chart and depth sounder as you make your way through the Thorofare.
Local Notices to Mariners are available online from the U.S. Coast Guard.
The lighthouse is now available for visits through Columbus Day. For more information
