About

Bali Hai Restaurant, located on the northern tip of Shelter Island, is a chic Polynesian paradise that first opened its doors in 1954. Tom Ham, a San Diego restaurateur, opened the island’s first “tiki temple,” which remains one of the largest original tiki temples in the world.

Family owned and operated for more than five decades, Ham’s vision continues to live on through his daughter, Susie Baumann, her husband Larry, and her sons, Grant, Tommy and Andy.

The property boasts two tiki icons: Mr. Bali Hai, a large wood sculpture that greets guests as they enter, and “The Goof”, a playful, mysterious remnant that still stands guard on the restaurant’s roof after more than 60 years, Bali Hai has also collected more than a hundred Polynesian artifacts that are on display around the restaurant.

Bali Hai prides itself on its spectacular views, outdoor venues, private boat dock for “dock and dine” guests and their sophisticated culinary flair. Generations of diners come for the delicious food, spectacular views and, of course, the restaurant’s world famous Bali Hai Mai Tais. It’s Asian-Inspired food features farm fresh ingredients with Hawaiian, Chinese and Japanese influences.
