Georges Island is home to historic Fort Warren, one of Boston's premier historic sites for Civil War-era history. Visitors can explore the fort's graceful granite archways, or catch stunning views of the Harbor and Boston Light from the ramparts. The island also features shade shelters and picnic areas with scenic water views.
Georges Island features two mooring areas, with options to moor close to Georges Island or across the channel adjacent to Gallops Island. The views from the Gallops mooring field of Ft. Warren are spectacular. Please note that Gallops Island is closed to public access.
The park is open from dawn until dusk, with facilities open during ferry operating hours. Reservations are available for both daytime and overnight use. Please note that pets are not permitted in the park. To find more information about park regulations and available activities on the island, please visit bostonharborislands.org.
All you promised. Great value and great relief.
Great service, website is easy to use, and quick response. Unfortunately, I was unable to use it because of a breakdown. But I love the service. When word first got out about these moorings being established, I thought "sure just one more way to regulate open space. But I don't feel like that anymore. As long as I plan ahead I can get a spot that I know is secure and will keep my boat safe while I visit the islands. And the system and people monitoring it are highly responsive. Great job.
Excellent stay, would like to see mooring maps that are easier to navigate
Nice mooring and close to the beach. Pennants are a little covered in growth but not anyone's fault there. Rockier than we expected from the channel nearby. Good place to pull in for the afternoon!
Too many waves from passing boats
Nice moorings convenient to the islands. Restroom facilities are locked during the week. The numbers on the mooring balls are hard to read from a distance.
Interesting location to Explore if you are a history buff, fair amount of wakes from ferries and other boats. Short row from mooring to land on the beach
Received a confirmation within minutes. Cheerfully received a mooring ball number within an hour and then, later, was given a more protected ball for the overnight mooring. Airplanes landing overhead and a reasonable amount of boat wake going by, but very nice in the morning.
Great and historical place to visit. I do recommend water shoes for the very rocky beach.
Easy pick-up of mooring offshore the historic Fort Warren. Moorings are adjacent to the park's ferry terminal which has ferries going to and from during the day. Relatively exposed mooring field that has great Boston views, but has some boater traffic from early morning til late at night; Logan Airport flights are audible. However, very quiet and still once night sets in. Hull and Hingham nearby.
Perfect and Barry with the DCR was more than helpful
Enjoyed the stay. Great place to moor for lunch on a day sail in Boston Harbor.
Love Dockwa…so friendly and accommodating!
What a wonderful place. The mooring ball was a short 30 second row to the beach. The island is wonderful and you can casually stroll around AND IN the old fort. Terrific displays and artifacts in the visitor center. Bring the kids.
Other vessel was on rented mooring when i arrived. Made the call to DCR and problem was resolved immediately.
Awesome spot -- prompt response from the marina and a great value! Will be returning.
Our stay was terrific. You folks do great work. We appreciate you!!!!!!
Great views and moorings are fairly well marked and in pretty good condition. With strong winds out of the SW fighting the tide it was pretty rough until the winds died down in the middle of the night. Paddocks would have been a better option in these conditions.
Someone was on the mooring I reserved. No one answered the phone or the radio and the ranger on Island when we told them we picked up a different mooring said they don’t care and why pay for a mooring just pick one up next time.
Fantastic view of the full moon coming up over George’s Island. An orange sunrise rose behind Boston light. Thanks for having us.
Easy tie up and a nice lunch. Thanks for setting us up.
Our day mooring off of Gallops Islands made for a perfect afternoon as always!
We had a west wind so with the long fetch us was a little choppy. I’m sure we could have moved to Spectacle because the Harbor staff are very accommodating.
Fantastic! We had a great time.
Ball in good shape. Beach landing for dinghy. The Island itself is fantastic. It was our 3rd visit. We love it. Talk a tour of Fort Warren with a park ranger!
Great way to spend July 4th! Beautiful day on the mooring at Gallops Island.
Well marked mooring balls. Island staff very helpful and knowledgeable. Great time.
easy to drop off passengers and find the mooring ball.
Great spot, easy to find the buoy
There was a situation regarding mooring 11. As u are aware we rented the mooring. When we showed up somebody was on the mooring and wouldn’t move. There should be a way of patrolling who and who doesn’t belong on a mooring. Having said that I’m fully aware that is really hard to control, but in the end the pirates will win?
Beautiful spot. Out mooring was occupied when we arrived but a staff person on a boat directed us to take the adjacent one. Lots of roll from wakes.
Easy mooring situation. Great day trip.
Love the place. Kids had a great time, bbqd on the island. So much fun
The DockWa app is user friendly and very quick at responding
Great day on the island just know you cannot tie up at the dock drop off only
Close to the channel
Great views, and fabulous place to dinghy in to for exploration.
Great location. Enjoying our continued exploration of the BHI.
The strong current and perdendicular wind caused the mooring buoy to knock against the vessel and damage the paintwork on the hull.
The island was fantastic! It was also pretty much ours because the weather was a little spotty. Not really complaining, because the moorings were less than $30/night, but the sense of urgency to book as soon as reservations were available was unnecessary. We were the only ones there the first night and there were only 2 others the 2nd night.
Secure with good line/painter. Only issue is waves with boat traffic and south west wind.
It was wonderful! Worked great
Great to be back on the water in the harbor
Super easy process and a great place to visit!
Before leaving, I called to get information regarding what's going on at Georges. No one answered. When we got there, we discovered that there was no launch. We were not able leave our 18 foot boat on the dock for our 2 h our stay. The result is that someone needed to stay on the boat or swim ashore. We didn't bring our bathing suits. The end result is that we never went ashore at all.
Always love the convenience of mooring offshore of such a beautiful park
helps to have two mooring lines, one for starboard and one for port. keeps bow into the wind. important only in situations where there is exposure to wind and choppy water.
We wanted to go see fort Warren yet crazy enough there is no dinghy dock here. The only option is to bring your dinghy up on the beach and we had to ask for special permission to do so. Pretty ridiculous when you have large boats from the city docking constantly.
Perfect place for an overnight stay. Beautiful! With easy access to three islands. Current can be 1-2kts. Parks department was very helpful and responsive.
Our assigned mooring was in operable due to the line being stuck underneath the mooring ball.
The moorings are always great. No fuss. The DVR staff is generally accommodating. On busy days when they fill up, depending on the attendant and if you talk to them first, they’ may let you squat on a mooring until the person who reserved it comes. That’s cool since we are only there for an hour or two most days.
Thanks for having us, super easy to drop people off at the dock, moor up, and paddle board to shore.
We reserved mooring 10 for the day, when we arrived at 12:30 pm our mooring was taken but another guest who claimed they reserved the same mooring number. Multiple other guests tied up claimed they had been double booked as well.
It is very convenient using the Dockwa app. The DCR Rangers respond to your reservation request very fast.
Easy working with Dockwa to secure mooring. Love this service
Was able to get our favorite morning thanks for all your help
We had a great stay. Well run moorings. Once sun sets it becomes quiet and calm with no traffic. Slept great! Best place to stay in Boston!!! Will come again and again.
Very good and very friendly help
Loved it! Staff was right on top of making sure our mooring was available. Great spot for views of the Boston Light & George's Island.
Easy to reserve on Dockwa. Attendant in boat pointed out our mooring, but with several in that area and numbers hard to see we had to search- would have helped if she had motored over to show us. Beautiful spot with excellent views of Boston skyline but wakes of passing boats in canal can be significant
Gorgeous spot nestled among the Harbor Islands. Great view of the city of Boston, particularly cool after dark. Not the smoothest mooring field due to traffic and currents, but well worth a stay. I hope these moorings will continue to be maintained.
Island boat crew was very helpful
Actually moored at Gallops Is. ... was quiet but lots of roll. Would go back.
Always love to visit George’s Island Now with a boat it’s even more fun Thanks
Mooring is exposed to just about every direction but East-SE. very good depth. Easy access to the beach north of the ferry dock. Nice Fort to visit and great grounds to watch Boston and great sailboats going out to the ocean and back. It’s can be rolly in winds above 10kt mooring but still worth it. Dockwa reservation was easy and very responsive folks on the island prior to arrival
WINDY BUT KIDS LOVED THE FORT
we got out and about out there, we didnt moore over night as we wanted to due to an electrical problem with the boat. but did get out there once we were fixed. great time will do that again!
The DCR guys on the scene work hard and are very accommodating when issues arise. Thanks,
Beautiful sunny day. Had to move someone off my mooring, but no issues. Thanks
Very convenient. Moorings all in good condition. Love the online reservations
Can't beat the location for the views and access to historic island. Great price and friendly service! Get off your boat and check out the amazing structures on the island. Such a treat!
We had an amazing time. This was the first time we requested a numbered mooring for it’s location, something I was wondering about. Dockwa was accommodating and replied quickly. A review solicitation was sent before we left and I was concerned that I had reserved it a day early and reached out. Again, Dockwa replied to assure is of our reservation and that they were working on their system in this regard. We met friends who anchored that we looking for a mooring to stay the night, and they contacted Dockwa to request our mooring that was reserved for the day as everything else was booked. Again, Dockwa responded to say that yes, our friends could reserve for the night. They spoke with the crew on the DCR boat monitoring for Dockwa. We ended a perfect day and our friends hooked up. Impressed with the responsiveness and excellent customer service.
We had a great day! Thank you
Professional friendly staff - mix up on who should be on what mooring - he got it squared away - very Helpful& friendly - please share a big thank you to your staff epically the captains on the water.
It was great as always love the Boston Harbor Islands Marc
Kevin was a pleasure to deal with. Easy Peasy
George’s Island is a great day trip. Spectacular views and tons of history.
Awesome day on the water. So glad I didn’t have to anchor, my small boat would’ve lost its hold. Channel was a bit wavy from all the boat traffic. DCR came around to check everyone’s reservations which is good.
Very easy to use and quick response.
The reservation was easy and Kevin from DCR was very helpful. Problem was that I was assigned mooring G17 at George’s Island and there was no mooring marked 17. All moorings were taken. Another call to Kevin revealed that there were two mooring balls in the field marked 18. The outer one was supposed to be 17. Squatter left without difficulty. Twenty minutes after arrival we were on our mooring.
The mooring was well marked and in great shape, we enjoyed a lovely stay for a few hours while we grill, swam and enjoyed watching all the boats go by through Nubble and The Narrows. All for $10, what a bargain!!!
Mooring balls looked well maintained. Very cool views ashore as well as open access to explore the fort. Looking forward to going back. Seas were quieter than at Peddocks.
We appreciate the moorings at the Boston harbor islands, especially in the summer of social distancing. Thank you!
Beautiful location ruined by washing machine action during the weekend day due to idiotic boaters at full throttle through Nubble Channel and along the Gallops and George’s Island Mooring fields. They should be designated a no wake zone. Nice and quiet come sundown. Pendent were a complete mess and should be cleaned regularly. Makes one wonder what the underwater parts look like. The area could be perfect for a little speed enforcement and maintenance.
Nice spot and nice new moorings
Georges is a great site for a picnic and short hike. The other reviewers are right that the mooring field is exposed. Might make for a poor night's sleep, but a very enjoyable daytrip. Kudos to the NPS for upgrading their mooring options this year. Or maybe kudos to the Mass State Parks people, since the islands are jointly run I think. Don't know who improved the mooring fields, but it is a great improvement. Not sure I'm keen on the plans for a luxury hotel on Peddocks on the other hand.
Ft. Warren ok, but no upkeep due to lack of funding. Lots of Canadien Geese fecal matter all over the place. If you boat there be advised no dingy dock. You have to beach your dingy. Mine was filled with water and sand upon my return. UGH!
Pulled up a mooring to have lunch - delightful, easy to access
The moorings are great, a real plus for enjoying the harbor. However while we had a reservation, they were all taken when we arrived, and we had to wait till a boat left. Seems to me that it's actually a free for all, regardless of reservations.
The island is great. I took a tour with a period actor Doctor Mcgill I thin it was who was a prisoner of war n th4eIsland. It was spectacular. Really well done. the food in the restaurant is a joke though. You really have to get a real restaurant in there.
Great mooring field!
Beautiful spot to watch a sunset.
High quality mooring
The mooring balls are a great addition to the George’s Island area. The person monitoring the area was very friendly. THANKS
Great location. Secure moorings.
Really nice to be able to visit the islands and be so close to Boston at the same time. Love the history at George's Island.
Great to see the additional moorings , worked great for us.
It was unclear which mooring field was being managed by Dockwa / Georges island. No one answered the VHF radio call )Ch16 or CH69) or cell phone number
No issue - only one there Hopefully you will be able to assign mooring number when the moorings start to be used.
