After requesting a local teenager at 8.30pm to refrain from fishing around our boat he refused to move stating he has every right to cast his lines right next to our boat any time he wants to. He then deliberately cast his line from the dock where the police boat is moored towards our boat and the lead weight bounced off the dock edge by the electric post at the stern of my boat in slip 5. When we protested he said he never hit our boat just the dock. We argued and then videoed him while we asked him once again to fish away from the boat. We then went below and took the rare step of putting our lockable security grill in place which we have not used since sailing in Venezuela. Later at 9.21pm in the dark we heard shouting outside and it was the fishermans mother who yelled at us that we should never ask her son to fish away from our boat. They left when we said we would call the police if they did not leave. It was a very unpleasant experience. The next morning we found a lure and 50ft fishing line wrapped around the guard rail and a shrimp lure with hook caught in a flotation device in the bottom of our inflatable dinghy. Before submitting this review we have reached out to Dockmaster and LaBelle city mayor who confirmed currently fishing is permitted on the dock. However they acknowledged they have had other complaints about similar incidents with fishermen and the city is now actively looking to pass an ordinance to ban fishing on the City Dock. It can take several months before this happens so in the meantime be prepared for noisy fishermen and be careful as you approach the pilings because the poles are draped with fishing hooks and line caught there. It is a shame as the town has a lot to offer in way of restaurants, shopping but we would avoid until fishing is banned to avoid future unpleasantness. Once the ordinance is passed and no fishing signs are posted we will update our review.
