Sandwiched between GIWW Miles 350 and 345, the Apalachicola River Railroad Swing Bridge carries Apalachicola NOrthern Railroad traffic across the Apalachicola River just north of Bay City. The bridge is located in a fairly remote area, and the main channel span is skewed to the west side of the river.
Use NOAA Chart 11402.
The bridge has a closed vertical clearance of 11 feet with 119 feet of horizontal clearance in the center span. Unlike many areas of the GIWW, this area has a channel that has been scoured deep by the swift current of the Apalachicola River. Depths in this area are in the eight- to 21-foot deep range, and the channel is uncommonly well marked for this area.
The bridge is automated and remains open unless there is railroad traffic approaching from either direction.
Local Notices to Mariners are available online from the U.S. Coast Guard.
