The town of Westbrook is situated on Long island Sound, between the Menunketesuck and Patchogue rivers about 35 miles northwest from Point Montauk on Long Island and
25 miles southeast of New Haven. Westbrook has an excellent variety of marine services lining its shores, and inside the town are several good groceries and drug stores for reprovisioning.

Navigating the Water:
Use NOAA Charts 12354 and 12374.

Westbrook Harbor Inlet is protected by an extensive set of breakwaters that extend off each end of Duck Island about a half-mile south of the opening to the Patchogue and Menunketesuck Rivers at Westbrook. The north end of the breakwater is marked with a flashing white fixed light (every four seconds) and the west breakwater is marked with flashing red fixed light “2DI.” You May approach Westbrook from either direction, but the north side of the breakwaters has the deepest water (the west side has nine- to 12-foot depths).

From the flashing white light on the north breakwall, set a course north to flashing red buoy “2” at the Westbrook entrance, and then pick up green can “3,” red nun “4,” and then flashing green “3A” on the west inlet breakwater. Once inside the inlet, a series of nun and can buoys keep you in the channel, and then the inlet splits to the west (Menunketesuck River) and north (Patchogue River).

Each river has a healthy supply of good marinas, with 16 in total on both rivers. Both the Patchogue and the Menunketesuck rivers have marinas that accept transients, and also each has at least one marina that can perform haul-outs and repairs.

Local Notices to Mariners:
Local Notices to Mariners are available online from the U.S. Coast Guard.
