Port Superior Marina is located just two miles south of downtown Bayfield, Wisconsin on Highway 13. We’re tucked into the well-protected Pikes Bay Harbor on Chequamegon Bay - right at the entrance of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The Apostle Islands and Chequamegon Bay offer some of the best freshwater boating, fishing, and recreational opportunities in the country. The waters here are clean and clear. Outstanding Support at Port Superior Marina Hats off to the staff and fellow members of Port Superior Marina. Our three-week adventure aboard Satori gave us incredible sailing, the pristine wilderness of Isle Royale, and the rugged beauty of Lake Superior’s north shore. It also reminded us just how valuable a great marina community can be when challenges arise. Early in our trip, a 50-amp terminal fuse blew and needed to be replaced. The marina staff quickly went to work, tracking down fellow PSMA sailors who were heading to Isle Royale and willing to bring us a backup fuse. Friends sailing near Houghton also stepped in to help, contacting the crew of the Ranger III. We were able to meet the boat in Windigo, receive the replacement fuse, and—thanks to guidance from our marina service technicians—get Satori back underway. A much bigger challenge came 107 miles from PSMA when our engine began to fail, ultimately leaving us dead in the water. Once again, the Port Superior Marina technicians were there to help, guiding us through troubleshooting efforts from afar. As we approached Outer Island, we were fortunate to accept a tow back to Port Superior. Once we returned, the marina technicians quickly diagnosed the problem: unbeknownst to us, a jerry container of diesel fuel had been contaminated with gasoline, causing the engine failure. The staff promptly drained the fuel tank and filters, replaced the contaminated fuel with fresh diesel, and got the engine running again. Everything sounded good, and after taking Satori out for a test run with instructions to “run her hard,” we’re happy to report that all is well. What stands out most is not simply the technical expertise, but the willingness of the Port Superior Marina staff and fellow members to step up when we needed help. That sense of community, combined with knowledgeable and responsive service technicians, made all the difference. We’re grateful to be part of the Port Superior Marina family and couldn’t ask for better support on the waters of Lake Superior.
Second time staying. Great staff. The restaurant is great but only open on Fri and Sat.
Stayed here before: My AC went out on Sunday night, called Monday ahead to get help when we arrive on Weds., no return call. Called again Weds morning, no return call. Got to the marina and no one knew how to fix it. Gave me a local contact to call. He came down Thurs and didn’t know how to solve the issue. I finally figured it out myself afterwards, needed a new control/display. Went to Bayfield, tried to use the public transportation, schedule was not convenient. No bikes available to borrow either. Walked both ways on the Brownstone trail. (Over 2 miles). It’s a nice trail but a long walk so we were unable to get groceries like milk and such. Staff always friendly & clean facilities, great pump-out service. They put us on a dock with plenty of room which is nice with a boat like ours with a 14.5’ beam. Only low-octane gas option. Had to go to Madeline Island for fuel choice.
