Approach to New London Harbor

New London is approximately 2.5 miles up the Thames River with the city of New London on the east side of the river and Groton on the west. There are two bridges that cross the river a railway and a highway bridge. You will see the New London Harbor light on the west side of the entrance to the channel. On the west side of the approach to the harbor had foul ground that extends upwards of a mile from shore around Goshen Point. This area is marked with buoys.

About New London Harbor

New London Harbor located at the mouth of the Thames River in New London Connecticut is a large and deep harbor with a rich history of commercial industries including whaling and shipbuilding. The harbor these days is a major Coast Guard port home to the Coast Guard Academy along with the US Coast Guard Cutter Chinook and Coast Guard tall ship Eagle. New London is a medium to small coastal city on the east coast of the Thames River about 2.5 miles from the mouth. The city includes maritime museums, a liberal arts college, multiple art museums and a lot of history. Close to the beach and a short ferry ride to block island there is much to do and explore around New London Harbor.
