Introduction:
Portsmouth is a small picturesque city of 23,000 residents. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard sits at the mouth of the Piscataqua River in between Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME.
Portsmouths Strawbery Banke area offers many historic homes, beautiful seasonal gardens and harbor tours. The downtown area boasts numerous fine restaurants and shops, a historic Music Hall and two theaters for the performing arts.
Portsmouth has more than 30 houses of worship, a first rate school system, and a large regional hospital. The City is one hour north of Boston, MA, and is conveniently near three international airports, the Downeaster rail service and Route 95.

History:
Settled in 1623, Portsmouth lays claim to being the nation's third-oldest city. John Paul Jones' ship [i]The Ranger[/i] was built here. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was established in 1800 as the country's first Naval shipyard.

Navigating the Water:
Use NOAA Charts 13274 and 13283.
Home to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the channel to Portsmouth Harbor and the Picatagua River is deep and well-marked. Precautions must be taken during tidal changes, as the current here can rip along at a beastly 4 knots at times.
Marine facilities line the south (NH) shore to the southeast of Seavey Island.

Transportation:
Located less than one hour north of Boston, MA., the New Hampshire/Maine Seacoast is easy to get to.
If traveling by air, Manchester Airport, northern New England's largest commercial airport, is located 35 miles west of the Seacoast and offers a convenient schedule of non-stop and direct service from major U.S. cities.
On the Seacoast, the Pease International Airport provides excellent general aviation services for private aircraft, charters and regular commercial service through Pan American Airlines, which operates flights to and from a host of airports in the Eastern United States. If you arrive in New England through Logan Airport in Boston, there are several limousine and bus services that provide transportation to various communities in the Seacoast area. Manchester airport is serviced by: Air Canada, Continental Airlines, Delta Connection-COMAIR, Delta Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, United Express, U.S. Airways, U.S. Airways Express.
