About

Introduction:

Apponaug Cove is located off Greenwich Bay about 10 miles south of Providence and two miles west of Warwick. Conveniently close to Providence and the T.F. Green International Airport, Apponaug Cove is a good spot to schedule some provisioning or take on crew.

The only caveat we offer in respect to staying in Apponaug Cove is its relatively close location to the main departure and arrival runway at the T.F. Green International Airport to the north in Providence. Morning flights begin around 6 a.m., and arrivals and departures run as late as 11 p.m. In the evening. Neither the marinas nor the mooring field are safe from jet noise despite noise abatement procedures.

Navigating the Water:

Use NOAA Chart 13221.

From Greenwich Bay, pick up flashing green buoy “1” at Round Rock, about a mile west of Patience Island and just south of Warwick Point. From here, chart a course for green can “3,” and then green can “5” north of Salty Rock (making sure not to pass over said rock). Once you have found green can “5,” catch green can “1” farther west, and then turn north to pick up green can “3” and red nun “2” at Cedar Point. The entrance has four-foot depths, but you should always navigate the channel with a close eye on your depth sounder.

Once you have negotiated your way into the inlet you will find three marinas, all of which accept transient marinas at their slips. The first marina is located directly to port at the entrance to the harbor (visible in the image above) and the other two are located farther upstream at the head of the harbor. Moorings are administered by two of the marinas in the cove.
