About

The La Conner Marina is a premier destination for recreational boaters, commercial fishers and marine-related businesses and manufacturers. Located within easy walking distance of charming downtown La Conner, the marina is a clean, service-oriented facility that tourists and La Conner residents alike enjoy visiting. Just as important, it’s an easy two-hour cruise from the marina into the heart of the beautiful San Juan Islands.

The Port of Skagit completed construction of its 300-slip moorage facility in what is now the South Basin in 1970. The North Basin was built in 1978. The Port added dry boat storage and commercial boat moorage spaces after that.

Today, the La Conner Marina features two separate moorage basins, which together cover approximately 24 acres. The marina has 366 covered moorage slips, 131 open moorage slips plus 2,400 lineal feet of dock space for overnight moorage.

Approach

The La Conner Marina is located on the Swinomish Channel two blocks north of the Town of La Conner – just ¾ of a mile north of the Rainbow Bridge and 3 1/2 miles south of the Highway 20 bridge. From the North – Bellingham (20 miles) Williams Point (Chart 18424) SE Point – Guemes Island (Chart 18427) From the West – Friday Harbor (28 miles) Upright Head (Chart 18434) Thatcher Pass (Chart 18429) Guemes Channel (Chart 18427) From the South – Everett (33 miles) Camano Head (Chart 18443) Saratoga Passage (Chart 18423) Skagit Bay (Chart 18427) Paying attention to the tides can help you estimate the time of slack water and duration of current flow in the Swinomish Channel at La Conner. Because it’s dependent on the range between high and low water, and is affected by river runoff, the time of slack current can only be estimated. These rules of thumb will help you predict slack water and current direction in La Conner: Slack water occurs 2.5-4 hours after high or low tide The current flows north from 2.5-4 hours before high tide to 2.5-4 hours after high tide The current flows south from 2.5-4 hours before low tide to 2.5-4 hours after low tide The tugboat operators base their estimate on the tide tables. Slack water at La Conner Landing occurs between 2.5 and 4 hours after high or low water. For example, if High Water at La Conner occurs at 5 a.m., slack will be sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. At periods of a minor tide change, the slack will occur closer to 2 hours after the predicted high or low. When there is a large change in tide, the current turns almost 4 hours later. When running during low tides in the southern part of the Swinomish Channel, boaters should favor the east side of the channel from the southernmost house in the Shelter Bay Community to the entrance of Shelter Bay itself. There is a rock wall breakwater on the east side, which should be favored. The western 2/3 side of the channel is very shallow from sediments deposited by the nearby Skagit River.

Small but very good! We loved the clean bathrooms, helpful neighbors, and proximity to town. Would absolutely return. Watch for low tide, especially getting out - the channel can be very low. Thanks!

Weekend of 8/20-22: This would have been our first visit to the La Connor Marina in our trawler. We were looking forward to learning about navigating the slough to the marina as well as celebrating with my son in the town for his birthday. Unfortunately, the unexpected boat repair I wrote about in my Port of Everett Marina review for that same weekend kept us in Everett for another night making it necessary to cancel our reservation for the La Connor marina. Again making reservations via the Dockwa app was a smooth, pleasant experience. The subsequent call to the marina office to cancel our reservation also went smoothly with a very nice, pleasant person, understanding of our situation, assisting at the other end of the phone. Although we still had to pay for a portion of our unused reservation, I knew that from the website and just appreciated how she made the experience hassle-free. We look forward to successfully making the trip to La Connor sometime in the future.

La Conner is a great destination. PROS- close to an interesting, scenic town with nice shops and restaurants, The dockwa reservation system worked great- wish more marinas would offer this, Swinomish Channel can have a few challenges- current and depth, fog, and the railroad trestle on the north end. CONS- current and especially wake from inconsiderate skippers make the outside guest ties a bit choppy at times, poor security- no gate at the guest dock where we had kids on bikes racing down the ramp and past our bike.
